Week Six-Andy

Identify a story in your organization that helps explain issues that need to be addressed.

When I was in university, my tutor asked me and my team to programing a website about students’ daily life, just like a school social network website. In the website, students and teachers can write down everything about study and share some resources to others, the website is all about school life and studying.

We spent 5 months to complete the website and cost one month to test the website. My team tried our best to make the website fantastic and wonderful. When finished the website, we all thought the students in my college would be interesting in it, and more resources would be put into the website.

The first day, when website published, more than 100 students to visit it. Many interesting affairs shared by students and teachers, but with the time passed by, less people will willing to visit it. And finally the website is closed by school, not my team. I asked my classmates why they did not use it, the answer was that they did not want any social network anymore, they had RenRen, Facebook, Weibo, they had no time to see any more similar website. And another reason we failed was that teachers asked us to do the website, but they did not use it, without the help of teachers, it was had to reach the goal we expected.

  1. Although this a somewhat negative story, it seems to me to be a great illustration of what can happen when a new technology initiative is not given enough support. In this case too, the initiative itself may have been ill-considered, given that it replicated functionality that students were clearly getting from elsewhere already.

  2. Hi Andy.
You story tells the importance of understanding the user needs before something is to be implemented. If the students did not have any other similar online platforms, the uses of the web sites should have been increased.
